I can’t hardly believe it, but I’m about a week away from my dream photography trip! One week in Alaska teaching Lightroom and photographing wildlife and amazing landscapes! We’ll be based out of Anchorage, but will day trip to Redoubt Bay, Brooks Falls, and Whittier. I’ll also have a day to myself where I hope to rent a car and drive down the Kenai. One of the great things about a trip is getting ready for that trip! This will be the furthest I’ve taken so much gear, and it’s quite a challenge to pare down to just what I think I will need. One bit of gear I’m most excited to bring with me is my GPS. My plan is to embed the GPS coordinates from each day’s shoot into my photos, import them into Lightroom, and then upload them in a Lightroom gallery I modified to turn the GPS data into links back to GoogleMaps. Here’s what is required:

GPS device that produces a tracklog.

Software to embed the GPS data into each photo’s metadata (I’m using ImageIngester).

Lightroom.

Here’s a sample gallery.

I really enjoy spending time around the house and in the yard. One of the biggest reasons I moved to the Northeast was because of the full-on change of seasons effect. Each season is so markedly different from the next. Each with its own delights and nuances. So many photographic opportunities await and the scenery is always changing.

With the 1.3 update for Lightroom came the welcome integration of Airtight’s AutoViewer, PostcardViewer, and SimpleViewer galleries. So, here are some postcards from my own backyard across the changing seasons.

Well the color has past, but I did want to share my favorite image from this season. I thought it was one of the most colorful foliage seasons we’ve had in years. This photo was taken a couple miles up the road at a waterfall I cross every day. It was a quiet foggy morning, perfect for flowing water shot.

Except, it isn’t actually one shot, but rather 5 different shots. Each with a different part of the image in focus, and then all combined using a program called Helicon Focus. By combining 5 different shots into one the entire image is in focus from foreground to background.I’ve made 16×20 prints of this image on canvas and it really is quite stunning to see so much detail throughout the image. Here’s how I did it.First, you’ve got to get the shots. I was standing in the middle of the moving water, so tripod, cable release and mirror lockup we’re all used to keep the camera as steady as possible for the series. Camera was in Manual so that I could keep the same exposure through out (1 sec at f/22). I also used a polarizer filter to reduce the reflections on the water. After importing the images into Lightroom I brought the 5 photos I wanted to use into Develop. I used the Auto Sync function to process this series:

select multiple images, hold Ctrl/Command and Sync button becomes Auto Sync, click Auto Sync

set white balance using White Balance Selector tool (click a light gray where the RGB values are in the 60-70% range)

tweak Exposure,Recovery and Blacks as needed

(optional) give it a little punch with Clarity and Vibrance

To make it a more seamless transition to Helicon I placed a shortcut to Helicon in Lightroom’s Export Action folder, so that once the images exported Helicon would launch and the images would be ready for the next phase.

So, I set my alarm for 5:30 thinking I would just catch a little bit of the eclipse before the sun came up. I really wanted to see more, but I’ve been so straight out I opted for sleep.

However, my son had other plans. 3am rolls around and I hear him calling “Daddy”, so after getting him settled back to sleep I was wide awake and the light streaming in from outside was calling me.

So, I pulled on some clothes, kissed the wife (so she knew I’d gone out), grabbed my camera (D200), my biggest lens (Nikon 80-400 mm), tripod and cable release … and headed out the door …

Being on the East Coast, I knew I would only get to see the beginning of the eclipse before the moon set and sun rose. The sky was cloudless. The moon was so bright I didn’t bother bringing a flashlight. It was perfect eclipse viewing weather. Being 3:30 am meant it was free of mosquitoes too.

A downside of being on the East Coast is that it is not ideal for viewing things happening on the western horizon. Just too many trees. The highest point with a clear western view was about 45 minutes drive away, so I headed that way.

Just a few minutes into my drive I passed a large open field with a small hill at one end (I was on the right side, close to the largest clump of trees in the field). This happens to be the same field I collected some monarch caterpillars to watch undergo metamorphosis with my son. Every day for the last two weeks I go to this field and get fresh milkweed for the growing larva. All they do is eat for two weeks straight. I read that if a human baby grew proportionally as much as a monarch caterpillar did in those two weeks it would weigh 8 tons!

3 of the caterpillars in my house were midway through their preparations for becoming beautiful jade jewels. This consists of anchoring themselves to a sturdy perch and hanging upside down for about 14 hours before turning themselves inside out in the span of about 5 minutes. Then they hang out in a chrysalis for another two weeks …

So, I decided to skip the long drive and head for the hill in the field.

Have you ever stood out in the middle of a field at 4 am? Me either. I live in a pretty rural area of Southern New Hampshire. Lot’s of woods, and farms and new housing developments. Plenty of streams and ponds too. Very pretty place this time of year.

As I started walking into the field I could see it was blanketed in a low lying fog. The moonlight was almost as bright as day, and I had no trouble seeing my way into the field. There are no houses bordering this field. There are some close by though. It didn’t take long to make it to the top of the small hill and set up my tripod.

It was surreal in the most beautiful way. Fog and dew and moonlight and being completely alone. It was so perfect!

… and it was so bright I killed some time photographing spider webs that were about 15 feet away …

and the tall grasses …

I was also listening to all the night sounds. I heard crickets (of course), the barred owl’s distinctive “who, who, who cooks for you” call back and forth, roosters (at 4-fricken-30 and no sun in sight), dogs barking, and (I-swear-to-the-Speculative-Being) coyotes howling … that was when the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

The occasional car puttered past oblivious to it all.

The eclipse show began around 4:50 (yes, I was 50 minutes early) and just as it was nearing totality the sun was rising behind me, and the sky became too bright to see it.

As I stood there watching the Earth’s shadow move across the moon I thought a lot about all the other caterpillars in that field, munching leaves, hanging upside down, undergoing their own transformations … and the one’s in my house who would be in this field if we hadn’t switched places.

Sometimes it is worth getting up early.

The other morning I had the pleasure of finding a female Cecropia Moth hanging out on my garage door. These moths are among the largest in North America, up there with Luna and Polyphemus. This one’s wing span was just over 4 inches. It was as fuzzy as a teddy bear.

One of the most interesting things about this (and other silkworm moths that I learned) is that it doesn’t eat once it reaches this adult stage. It doesn’t even have mouth parts. Its only purpose is to mate, and it has about 2 weeks to do so, then game over.

I gently brought it inside to my light tent set up in my office. They only fly at night, so I figured it was safer in there then on my garage door. It obliged in opening its wings for me during a short photoshoot, which was quite lovely (although I suspect it felt as though it was being its most terrifying self).

Just after dusk fell, my soon-to-be 6 year old son assisted me in returning her to the “wilds” of our backyard. It was wonderful to stand there with him, moth as big as his hand perched on his outstretched finger, and then without a sound it fluttered off into the darkening woods.
